Saw Taming of the Shrew at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday evening.

Parking was horrible, what with the Moonlight Cinema, Taming and a wedding at the Gardens, something on at the Myer Music Bowl, and performances at the new Recital Hall. Oh, and it was Valentine's day. We drove around Birdwood Av twice, and several times saw people in the process of parking in a place which had just been vacated. We ended up at the Arts Center carpark.

During the performance, I discovered that I am not suited for seating in a triclinium. I lay on my side most of the show, and the shoulder on that side is still stiff and sore.
One of the other punters had a T-shirt which I may have been the only other person in the place to be able to get: “Luke,” it read, “is mise d'áthair” (which is “Luke, I am your father”, but in Gaelic).

The performance itself was good, I thought. It is amazing how much the performers must add to the play, the ad-libs and other such things which simply can't be written down, or if they are, lose their power. “I am Petruchio, son of the late Antonio (groin thrust, WOOF!)” My point being, you had to be there. The guy who played Petruchio (who you may know as the guy in the Mitre 10 commercials) is a brilliant comic actor, in my estimation.

Gah. Have to get back to building the image upon which all machines in Engineering are to be based from now on (except for the ones which won't). Classes start in three weeks. No pressure.

N. used to work for that Shakespeare company as their office/box-office manager; she'll be glad to hear the new season's going well.

And yeah, that actor (his name escapes me) is really good with comedy.

He did a wicked Puck a few years ago. (And I use the term advisedly: he definitely had the giggling menace of a barely-controlled natural force. “That merry danger to life and limb” sort of thing.)

The main stage area in this performance was so that the stage was between the audience and the lake. Puck's final soliloquy was delivered on the move: he started flown above the island, then dropped and he started walking towards the audience... over the water. (I think a walkway just under the surface) then up and into the middle of the audience, and when he delivered the final word “Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends.” — *blink* out went the spot, and every other light beside, and he vanished.

At least, that's how I remember it.

They know how to stage Shakespeare, they do.

Yeah, I saw that show; it was just as N. and I started dating. I had to meet pretty much every actor and stagehand that night to be shown off. Or possibly vetted.

They did an indoor production of Richard III last year that I didn't like, but their outdoor shows are much more interesting.

Yes, but I've been informed that they don't need computer labs for the first week.

Please join me in praying that this is correct... I have this feeling that the extra week may be necessary.

Oh, fuck.

Ok, that makes sense I suppose.

I will tell my 340/440 students not expect anything till week 2... the 440s usually start on the Thursday of week 1.
