Read this.
"British Muslim scholars are drafting a fatwa that will strip the bombers, if proved Muslims, of the right to call themselves so.

"The Muslim minority in Britain has vehemently condemned the terrorist attacks.

"London attacks had also drawn condemnation from scholars, officials and individuals from across the Muslim
[world] as running counter to the teachings of Islam."

That Fatwa is interesting: it says that if you are a suicide bomber, then you cease to be Muslim in the eyes of Allah. That means when you die, you die without religion. That means you don't get to go to paradise, and those 70 houris (which could mean virgins, or could mean a fizzy fruit drink, depending on which language the Qur'an was written in) have to find something else to occupy their time for the rest of eternity.

For people who take fatwas seriously, it would certainly take the fun out of being a 'martyr', wouldn't it?

Now why have I not seen this on the news? Anywhere?

It probably went to the same place as those widespread and vehement condemnations did: the Memory Hole. We can't have evidence of Muslims acting decently and inteligently, now, can we?

It will be more newsworthy if the fatwa actually gets issued and has striking content.

Isn't that a bit like the Pope issuing a [whatever the Pope issues] that the Protestants are all going to hell?

I figured the suicide bombing type Muslims were essentially a splinter religion unto themselves. Hence a bunch of mainline Muslims won't have much influence.

Though, in the eyes of the rest of the world it might count for something _if_ they can get it into the mainstream media with enough impact to be remembered.

That would be a Papal Bull. And several Popes did precisely that, by the way.

Yuo are right, though. The problem is that most Muslims see the suicide-bombing fundies as lunatics who besmirch the name of Islam, and the fundies see themselves as the only true Muslims, and everyone else as platitude-mouthing hypocrits who besmirch the name of Islam.

The problem is that the western media tends to present the fundies as either a majority, or the leaders, or both, and they are neither.

The point of this fatwa would mainly be to get the message out that suicide-bombing is utterly unacceptable. No-one really believes that it will change more than a couple of people's behaviour, and they would have been convinced by reason anyway.

Of course, its value as a Statement is utterly negated if no-one outside the Muslim community knows that it exists. If it is kept quiet, then the demonisation of Muslims can continue as before.

For the record, I did see it mentioned on the news the other night, but that was a one-line aside in the semi-penultimate sentence of a long and detailed story, and gave neither context nor explanation of consequenses.

The Wah says...
