Finally it makes sense.

Laurie Ferguson wants to be fired.

Why else would he contradict his own Fearless Leader (twice!), the Minister for Immigration, and general opinion by claiming (again) that Peter Qasim shouldn't be let out because he 'hasn't been cooperative', even after even Vanstone has been forced to grudgingly admit that, in fact, he has.

What is Ferguson's criterion for 'sufficiently cooperative', anyway?

"Oh, I am so sorry for being a bother, I'll just return to whatever country will take me, and find some way of paying back the costs of my open-ended incarceration. In the meantime I'll tell everyone how great Australia is, but that no-one should ever go there. especially if they are in desperate need of refuge from abuse and torture. Would you like a back-rub?"
