Hamas are thoroughly unpleasant people. Evil, even. Bloodthirsty, xenophobic, happy to throw around genocidal rhetoric, happy to send their own children to their deaths. Fully paid up members of the Serial Killers' Federation indeed.
And I hope that they are bad enough to justify Israel having become everything it should stand against.
If you're going to demonise 1.5 million people for having murderous thugs having taken charge of the place (when you have a giant open-air prison and don't have warders, then of course the nastiest sons-of-bitches are going to take charge), if you're trying to convince them that their leaders are monsters, if you're trying to convince them that their gaolers are actually looking out for their best interests, maybe you could start by not deliberately bombing schools and civilian shelters.
“Oh no, it's perfectly legitimate to bomb the fuck out of anything we can see, because the people we kill and maim might have talked to someone in Hamas at some point in their life, and that's enough to make them a sympathiser and a legitimate target. Or the four-year-old daughter of one. Either way. And everyone hates us and wants to annihilate us, including the self-hating Jews who don't understand what our pressures are her from their safe homes in the rest of the world, and let no-one mention the marches in places like Tel Aviv.”
And if you want to take out the thugs in charge and replace them with something which is not actually worse than Hamas, this is exactly how not to do it. If Israel do manage to wipe out Hamas through their cunning strategy of bombing schools and apartment buildings, does anyone think that the replacement will be more moderate? And does anyone beside the usual slavering bloodthisty maniacs take joy or comfort in this? And if Israel wanted the Palestinians to take power away from Hamas, maybe they could help them, instead of incessantly tightening the thumbscrews.
Yes , Hamas are monstrous, a gang made up of thugs and murderers. But that does not excuse anyone from basic standards of humanity. Especially from a proclaimed bastion of Western Civilisation and Democracy in the Middle East, founded in the recent memory of horror and pain and death.
The IDF and people like Tzipi Livni and Ehud Barak have stared into the Abyss just that bit too long, and it has settled into their souls. And they have become like what they are fighting, only with Apache gunships and tanks.
Moreover, for all of Israel's and the Zionist apologists around the world's continual whining, they know that they can do whatever they like in Gaza, no matter how horrible, because i. all they have to say is “Hamas fired a rocket from there once” and everyone shuts up because Hamas really is that bad, and ii. no-one will stop them. No Security Council resolution will pass, because the US has a 100% record of blocking anything which criticises Israel at all ever, and everyone else is shit-scared of being ‘anti-Semitic’, and will wring their hands and call for more ‘Peace Process’ and ‘Dialogue’, in which time the IDF will just keep pounding, punishing each Israeli death with 100 Gazan deaths.
And if they're called on it, then they were taking out a Hamas rocket position, honest, and the deaths of those umpteen children was completely regrettable, and the blame is all on Hamas's head anyway, they are so horrible that even killing children is (unfortunately) necessary to wipe them all out. We've heard that sort of rhetoric before. It was never good. That we hear worse from Hamas does not excuse this!
