I like this algae oil, so although I know it was not put forward as a way to fulfil global oil demand, just for fun I did some sums and worked out that to produce enough oil to supply global oil demand for year 2004, 12,631,920 acres would need to be under algae. Which is a lot, but not impossible. I wonder what the overhead would be?
Another reason I like it is because, as you pointed out, algae can be farmed anywhere there is enough sunlight and water, so intercontinental shipping of oil will not be necessary. Localised oil production and refinement would be sweeeet!
