Funny, that.
Feb. 6th, 2007 02:35 pmRobert Jovicic has declined to believe the Federal government of Australia, when they informed him that they would graciously allow him to stay in the only country he knows (not officially, of course, they just promised to ignore him) if, and only if, he declares allegiance to a foreign nation and thereby nullify his claim to Australian citizenship. If, in other words, he resolves his current statelessness by applying for citizenship of whatever country he is told to, even if that statelessness embarrassment value for the government is the only thing keeping him from freezing to death in a city where he doesn't even speak the language.
And he has good reason to fear relying on the government's goodwill.
Because our friendly Liberal Federal government has demonstrated time, and time, and time again, that they have no goodwill. Except for incompetent ex-Senators and multi-Billionaire robber barons, of course.
Bastards.

Date: 2007-02-06 06:07 am (UTC)Especially when you read the part in the second link where the armed
jackbooted thugsimmigration officers had taken the man away, and his father said that he had been in Nazi Germany, and he felt the same fear then as now.Our government is being compared, by someone who has direct personal experience with both, with Nazis.
How is that not an obscenity?

Date: 2007-02-06 06:10 am (UTC)The one thing that gives me hope is that the public seems to be waking up to a whole slew of issues that the gubmint has been ignoring, and hence may well throw Howard out on his ear later this year. $DEITY, I hope it happens.
Then, of course, we have to try to persuade the new gubmint to wind back these changes... I think I just killed my hope. :-(
