Apparently the US have a version of this going live in Iraq in 2008. That'll make it feel like it's the future - exoskeletoned troops kicking down doors, talking through creepy voice filters.
The yanks will have a suit that cost $17,000,000,000 or so to develop, $230,000/unit to make, will only be supplied to specific troops (when available), and won't work. (All figures rectally extracted, but in the right order of magnitude.)
This one was developed for $CA15,000, is projected for mass production at a cost of $CA2,000/unit, and has already been extensively tested to the poit where the maker will happily wear one and stand in front of an elephant gun. And he wants to sell it to the Canadian army, not the US army, who have a much better record vis à vis, eg., unannounced flash-bang entry followed by rape, multiple murder and arson.
Further: yes, I know that this technology will be used sooner or later to introduce real life Imperial Stormtroopers.
But still, look at it. It was designed by a guy who built a suit of armour that he could face down an angry grizzly bear in. He modelled it after RoboCop, Star Wars, and Batman.
I like this one a lot better. I think it'll be cool to see Canucks doing all kinds of crazy special-ops on peacekeeping missions whilst kitted out with these.
Oh, and I see that he does want to sell it to the US army.
Given how much difficulty they have, on the other hand, merely supplying enough flak jackets, I don't think there will be that many floating around, even if they haven't been pulled out before then.
