It appears that John Howard wants Australia to have a full-blown Nuclear Industry, including the full gamut from mining the ore to running our own power stations. The evidence for this statement is that he has re-opened the nuclear debate.
Note: *re* opened. Some of us will know that we have already had the nuclear debate. Several times. Howard lost. Every time, the nays had it resoundingly.
That is, of course, Not Good Enough for our man John, who knows better than those so-called 'Experts'. (Cue John's mates in the media and his campaign to discredit the entire intelligensia as unreconstructed Stalinists and tree-huggers all -- except for the ones who agree with him, of course.)
He also knows better than to simply override public opinion and just go ahead, so he is manufacturing the necessary consent by not allowing us to *stop* having the nuclear debate until he gets the answer he wants.
This is a typical tactic of his: to not let the topic die until he has the answer he wants. A variant is to let the 'debate' get so confused and mired in virtiol that he can claim it came out his way anyway. And it keeps working.
