Usuakari and Tooticky's wedding.
Apr. 3rd, 2006 05:14 pmI was well enough to make it, and was glad I did. After Usuakari's car blew its alternator the night before, and the RACV had no replacement when they turned up (late) to fix it, and Usu and Tooticky were late getting to the house to change to get to Cloudehill... Well, let's just say that the weather may simply have been Usu projecting really strongly. When our gazes crossed as he arrived to get changed as I was leaving to help at Cloudehill, I thought the back of my head was going to burst into flame.
Happily, he calmed down by the time they arrived, and, as he said, no-one had to die. Which is good.
erudito has already commented on the laughter, which was appropriate. I have to wonder how much planning went into the weather, because as the rain came down, and the antarctic winds blew, the ceremony itself was replete with references to "weathering the storm" and "waiting for the rain to stop for the sun to come out". Tooticky's father held the ceremony with ease and assurance, which makes sense, because it is his job. One of the first laughs came when he told Usu and Tooticky to face each other, and not him: "You're marrying each other, not me," to which Tooticky replied, "Dad, that's just creepy." My job was to stand there, hold Usu's fedora, give him the ring at the appropriate time, and try not to fall over. I think I succeeded. Afterwards, I gave a toast, but I was saved from having to deliver a speech I hadn't written. (Usu's brother was apparantly glad that I had made it, so that he didn't have to avoid giving a speech he hadn't written.)
Theafterparty reception was at Tooticky's parent's house in the mountains, about ten minutes drive from Cloudehill. The spread was magnificent, and I would have appreciated it more if I had been able to do more than nibble at some ham and have a cup of tea. I had conversation with people I haven't spoken to in years... a decade or more in some cases. Erudito was his usual charming and... well, erudite self. Usu was looking a little shell-shocked at times, and both he and Tooticky agreed with my theory that one's wedding day is both an hour and three weeks long, both at the same time. Usu was apologetic that he hadn't had more of a chance to talk with me during the day, but I tried to reassure him that this was normal and expected. There were meny more people who I only really know from LJ, and no doubt many more who I know or are acquainted with on LJ, but don't know their faces to put to the handle. (As Jamie said, there were so many faces to which one had the thought "Do I know them? I think I do, but now... is the name I am associating with that face their SCA name, their roleplaying name, their LJ name, their birth name, the name on their drivers licence...?")
As a wedding, it did what it was supposed to. It stressed everyone out beyond human capacity. It gave Usuakari and Tooticky a public and legally binding affirmation of their love for each other. It was a milestone ceremony. It made the bride and groom's parents very happy.
And I hope Usuakari and Tooticky will be nearly as happy as Usuakari's father expressed himself to be. And hopefully their honeymoon will avoid giving them anything to stress about.
(Well, maybe a little. I sometimes think Usu isn't entirely happy unless he has something to snarl about, but that's another story, and besides, I'm busy throwing stones in this glasshouse...)

Date: 2006-04-08 12:57 am (UTC)Other than that we're having a good time. Tassie is living up to the promise of what our wedding day showered on Victoria. I now firmly believe that Lake St. Clair is even wetter than Strahan. I've seen a lot of snow, and even walked through it. And tonight we even get to sleep in a double bed all of our very own. :)
