I've been a real live job-title-and-everything Sysadmin for almost two weeks now.

I have the keys passwords to the kingdom, and my passcard lets me into the server room.

I have so far managed to avoid breaking anything. And I have been to a three-day course on TSM, the IBM backup system.

Oh, gods. The interface, as far as I am a judge, still assumes that the operator will be using a teletype. One of the things we did while doing the exercises was to figure out how to force the damn thing to put its help text through less, and not to page through a screen at a time, one direction only, if you miss the bit you were looking for, too bad, start again.

And, the model for how the thing goes together is ... let's just say that I don't think mere mortals are meant to be able to comprehend the thing: just do these steps in this order, and try not to think about it too much.

At least, when it comes down to it, dsmc 'restore /file/name' is idiotproof enough.

I'm not too keen on the overbright open-plan cube farm, sitting right on the walkway, with everyone meeting my eye as they pass, and the fluoros giving me a headache. I'm considering taking a hat in.

In what may be a dire sign, I have been declared to be The Guy Who Knows Windows.

And then, I've just been named the next Goutte d'Eau Herald, the Baronial Herald of Stormhold. Hopefully, things will just work without too much stress. People seem to think I can pull it off, though.

And then, I got a phone call this morning. After a six-month wait, I have an appointment early next month to get tested for Asperger's. Three weeks and $690 to go.

It all seems to be happening.
