Distance travelled: about 13 km from home to work.
Time left from home: 8:15am
Time arrived at work: 9:00am
Average speed: a bit over 17km/h.
What is disturbing is that the Public Transport way in would take from 8:15 to 9:30, giving an average speed over much the same distance of 10.4 kp/h.
If I wasn't so (1) unfit and (2) in fear of my life on those roads at that time of morning, I'd think about riding a bike in. As it is, though, 13 km of Melbourne peak hour traffic through the city... I much prefer being surrounded by a non-trivial amount of metal armour.
Good Gods, the alpha-personality retards in their RX-7s andAPC4WDs, who think by changing lanes every two meters, they will get to their ever-so-important destination 10 seconds earlier. They tail-gate. They cut off. They do right-hand turns from the left-hand lane. They take any gap of more than thirty centimeters between cars as enough to change lanes into.
( This is what I think of these people... )
That they have not been struck from the face of the earth is proof enough that God is either dead or uncaring.
