Edit: Just as I posted that, there was a phone call from Mother-in-Law. She summoned me over to a house over the road from her to help with a crisis.
The fireworks had terrified a small whippet-cross, home on its own. It tried to get out under the front gate, but got well-and-truly stuck there, and in the effort to free itself had gotten one foreleg in between palings, and had pushed with all its force. So not only was his head stuck under the gate, his leg was wedged, and bent to boot.
I had to jump the fence, move him so that his leg wasn't wedged, then lever the gate up on its hinges with my boot so he could free his head. Cut my boot up some, too. The dog limped around, subdued and favouring the foreleg, but not trembling.
There was nothing else we could do, so we left him there. Mother in Law is going to have some Words with the owners in the morning.
The new year not five minutes old, and already there's excitement.
