Yesterday: Working bee at Abi's school. When I arrived I was dropped straight into helping empty the sandpit of old lunch wrappers and sand of dubious provenence. Immediately followed by refilling it with nice new clean builders' sand. Immediately followed by helping to redo the paving around the same sandpit. Nothing like a bit of exercise first thing on a Sunday morning. I don't know I'm really up for making a habit of it, though.

Abi noticed the difference and was impressed. My back is still telling me about it. In a good way, though. Which is a nice change.

Today: remembered that I had an appointment with the vampires. One thing and another kept me at my desk later than I had hoped, but I was only about ten minutes late. Not very busy, so I was quickly in the chair with my left sleeve rolled up.

It seems I got the work experience nurse. What would normally be a quick find-the-vein, wipe-with-disinfectant, stick-the-needle-in, wait, turned into wrap-binding-around-arm, pump-up-veins, fiddle-with-bag, repump-up-veins, wipe-with-disinfectant, fiddle-with-machine-and-tape, repump-up-veins, stick-the-needle-in-which-hurt-and-kept-hurting, call-over-another-nurse. So I ended up giving from my right arm, and nine hours later my left arm still hurts. I expect a fairly impressive bruise tomorrow. While I was there, two people passed out. Watching the guy in the next seat turn white and have his eyes roll back was new to me.

Tomorrow: a Professional Staff ‘retreat’. We would far prefer to spend our time advancing, or at the very least treading water in the stagnant sewerage we call a ticketing system. Theoretically we could, as we have been told (again) that attendance is not mandatory. There will be a roll taken, and Questions Will Be Asked if one does not show one's face for eight hours of butchers' paper and interminable powerpoint obfuscating exactly why we can't afford to be allowed to do our jobs, or get enough help to make the attempt anything more than a sick joke. No, it is not compulsory to go, but we have to go. Heaven forfend that we do our jobs.
