I think it also has to with the somewhat ambiguous role of Judaism in the origins of Christianity, and the long history of fairly poor relations between the two faiths.

There's also, of course, the hypocrisy of (among others) the US and Australian governments in being quite happy to support a land rights claim that doesn't involve them giving up their territory.
